Research Safety Information

Manne Research Institute contracts with Research Safety at Northwestern University to provide research safety training and ensure safe research conduct. Research safety training is required for all personnel prior to entering lab space.

General Research Safety Information​​

  • Safety Training: Contact Research Safety at Northwestern University for required safety training and general laboratory safety resources, hazardous materials shipping, and hazardous waste disposal. ​
  • Medical Emergencies: In the event of a medical emergency, call 911. For more information on addressing medical emergencies, visit the Medical Emergencies webpage or contact Research Safety.
  • Spills: Follow these guidelines​ in the event of a laboratory spill.
  • Incident Reports: Incident report forms may be obtained from Research Safety at Northwestern University.​

An annual research safety seminar is hosted by Manne Research Institute in collaboration with Research Safety at Northwestern University. Personal Protective Equipment​

White Laboratory Coats​

  • Lab coats must be always worn in all lab spaces.​
  • ​All Manne Research Institute personnel involved in research activities are provided one white lab coat at no cost. These coats prominently display the logos of Stanley Manne Children’s Research Institute and Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. Embroidered-name lab coats are provided at no cost to Principal Investigators, Assistant and Associate Faculty, and Research Scientists. Labs may opt to purchase additional lab coats or embroidered-name lab coats for other research personnel at their discretion and expense.​
  • Research Safety at Northwestern University also provides white lab coats bearing the Northwestern University emblem at no cost.​
  • Laundering services are provided by Research Safety at Northwestern University. Researchers may drop off soiled lab coats and take a clean one. Lab Coat drop-off and pick-up is in the Fisher stockroom, room 1M-212 on the Simpson Querrey Biomedical Research Center's mezzanine level. Lab coats should never be taken home for any reason.

Other PPE​

  • Some research safety supplies are available outside of the Fisher stockroom.
  • Additional PPE such as safety glasses, face shields, and cryogenic gloves can be obtained through Research Safety at Northwestern University
