Bridging Discovery to Care: The Role of the Clinical Research Unit

Clinical trials for pediatric patients are especially complex. Few organizations are capable of handling that complexity. Lurie Children’s is one of them. Our mission and structure are built for this purpose: translating discoveries into care and turning research into real opportunities for children and families. At the heart of that effort is our Clinical Research Unit (CRU) on the 19th floor of Lurie Children’s. Dedicated clinical research units like ours are rare in pediatric medicine. Having this space and the expertise to support it allows Lurie Children’s and Manne Research Institute to bring leading-edge treatments to children who might otherwise not have access to them.

New Device Helps Parents Learn How Much Breast Milk Baby Consumes

An interdisciplinary team that included researchers from Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago has developed a new wearable device that provides clinical-grade, continuous monitoring of breast milk intake. 

Study Investigates Role of Brain Scans for Youth with Symptoms of Psychosis

A study published in Academic Emergency Medicine shows that brain scans are infrequently helpful for evaluating symptoms of psychosis in children in the emergency department, particularly when there are no concerning signs or symptoms that might suggest a need for neuroimaging. These findings might inform guidelines for evaluation of psychosis and might also contribute to lowering costs of care by avoiding unnecessary testing.

New Resource Details Pediatric Acute Care Regions

Pediatric acute care in the United States is highly regionalized, and access to it is inadequate for many children. Recognizing the need for a resource specific to how and where children receive acute care, a team that included researchers from Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago developed a national atlas detailing pediatric acute care regions. They published their results in JAMA Pediatrics. The new map of pediatric acute care will guide research, policy, and regional quality efforts.

Researchers Propose that DNA’s Geometry is Key to Cellular Function

Analyzing the sequences of DNA’s four chemical bases tells scientists about the fundamentals of how cells and organisms work. A new discovery by a multi-disciplinary team of researchers from Lurie Children’s and Northwestern University proposes that the physical, geometric structure of DNA and how it is packaged in the cell nucleus—the “geometric code”—contains information critical to cellular function.

$1.8 Million Grant to Fund Expanded Diabetes Camp Study

A team of pediatric psychologists from the Pritzker Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago received a $1,835,000 grant from the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust and Eli Lilly, managed by the American Diabetes Association. 

NIH Awards K23 Grant to Monica Bianco

Monica Bianco, MD, Attending Physician, Endocrinology, at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, recently received a K23 award from the National Institutes of Health National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. The award in the amount of $944,519 will support her study Developing a Predictive Risk Score for Pre-Diabetes in Youth.

Lisa Akhtar Receives R01 Award from the NIH

Lisa Akhtar, MD, PhD, Attending Physician, Infectious Diseases at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, received an R01 award from the National Institutes of Health and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. The $2,992,584 award (award period July 2025–June 2030) will support her study, “The Contribution of HSV-2 ICP34.5 Variation to Neurovirulence During Neonatal Infection.”
